If your main X timeline feels like drinking from a fire hose, Lists are the tap you control. A List is a custom timeline built from a group of accounts you choose. Open the List and you see recent posts from only those accounts, in one focused feed, with none of the algorithm's detours. For many longtime users, Lists are the feature that makes X feel manageable again.
Creating your first List
Open the Lists section from your profile menu, tap the create icon, and give your List a name and a short description. Then add accounts. Here is the part people miss: you do not have to follow an account to put it on a List. You can add any public account, which means a List lets you quietly keep up with accounts you want to read but not follow — local news outlets, industry analysts, rival teams, or a handful of close friends.
X allows up to 1,000 Lists per account, and each List can hold up to 5,000 accounts, so there is plenty of room to organize by topic: one List for breaking news, one for your hobby, one for people in your town, one for accounts that post great photos.
Public or private? Choose deliberately
Every List is either public or private, and the difference matters. A public List can be viewed by anyone, and other users can follow it themselves — handy when you curate a genuinely useful collection, like every reporter covering your favorite team. Members of a public List can also see that they are on it.
A private List is visible only to you. Nobody can see it, see who is on it, or find it from your profile, and accounts you add are not notified. Private Lists are the right home for competitor watching, research projects, job hunting, or any set of accounts you would rather keep to yourself. When in doubt, start private; you can always share later.
Pin Lists and swipe between timelines
The real magic is pinning. From your Lists screen, tap the pushpin icon next to a List and it becomes a tab at the top of your Home timeline, sitting alongside For You and Following. You can pin up to five Lists this way and reorder them. On mobile, just swipe sideways to move between your timelines: main feed, news List, hobby List, local List.
Unpinning only removes the shortcut. The List itself, its members, and your subscription to it stay exactly as they were.
You do not have to build them all yourself
Other people's public Lists are one of X's best discovery tools. On any public List page you can tap Follow to add it to your own collection without adding a single account to your Following list. It is a fast way to plug into a whole topic — and a good reason to make your own best Lists public, since every follower of your List is a small vote of confidence in your curation.
Start with two or three Lists, pin them, and spend a week reading through them instead of the main feed. Most people who try it never go back to a single timeline.
