A portrait photograph of Elon Musk in a dark jacket and white shirt against a light background.

Advertisers on X will soon have to worry about more than whether an ad is accurate. They will also have to worry about whether it looks good enough. In a post on Friday, October 16, Elon Musk announced that all advertising on the platform will be subject to what he called a reasonable aesthetic standard, and that advertisers who fall short could lose the ability to advertise altogether.

X's New Terms Drop the Promise That Changes Will Not Be Retroactive

The illuminated X sign sits atop the company's headquarters building in San Francisco at night.

X's new Terms of Service took effect on October 9, 2026, and the most telling change is a short sentence that is no longer there. The previous terms said, in the section that lets X revise the agreement, "The changes will not be retroactive." In the new version, that sentence is gone in both regional texts, according to a line-by-line comparison published by Venpo, which monitors vendor terms.

Nitter Says It Has No Lawyer Left as Fight With X Drags On

A hand holds a smartphone showing the Twitter bird logo on a bright blue screen outdoors.

For years, people who wanted to read public posts on X without signing in had a quiet workaround. Nitter, an open-source project, fetched public posts and presented them in a clean, lightweight view, stripping out ads, tracking cookies and heavy scripts. Services such as XCancel were built on top of it, and many readers treated those pages as their front door to the platform.

X Removes More Than 13,000 Accounts in Pre-Midterm Influence Sweep

X has removed more than 13,000 accounts that it says were part of three suspected foreign influence operations aimed at political debate in the United States, announcing the sweep on Wednesday evening ahead of the midterm elections on November 3.

According to the platform, the networks used inauthentic accounts to post and amplify political content aimed at candidates and public figures across the political spectrum. X said it found the accounts through proactive sweeps and investigations under its rules against spam and coordinated inauthentic behaviour.

Cartoon illustration of people gathered around a large smartphone showing a rising chart and a coin, with speech bubbles and a small bird nearby.

A recent update turns that shortcut into a starting point for action, at least for users in the United States.
